LEGAL COMMITTEE ELECTS OFFICERS, APPROVES TIMETABLE

19960920 The Sixth Committee (Legal) this afternoon, beginning its work for the current session, elected Felicity Jane Wong (New Zealand) and Dumitru Mazilu (Romania) as Vice-Chairmen of the Committee. Pascaline Boum (Cameroon) was elected Rapporteur. The Committee also approved its timetable of work for the session.

Also this afternoon, the Committee requested the working group on international law to continue its work for the fifty-first session, with the Chairman to be named at a later date.

Committee Chairman Ramon Escovar Salom (Venezuela) said informal consultations would be held on when the Committee would take up the item on measures to eliminate international terrorism, since the report on the matter would not be released before 1 October. He also called attention to the gravity and scope of the issues before the Committee, adding that its agenda might well establish the basis for the work of the United Nations in the next century.

The representative of Cuba said a formal proposal would be submitted to take up the medium-term plan in the Sixth Committee and the Chairman said informal consultations would be held to discuss the matter.
