NEW PERMANENT REPRESENTATIVE OF BANGLADESH PRESENTS CREDENTIALS

19960919 Biographical Note Anwarul Karim Chowdhury, the new Permanent Representative of Bangladesh to the United Nations, today presented his credentials to Secretary-General Boutros Boutros-Ghali.

Prior to his current appointment, Mr. Chowdhury was Secretary of the Executive Board of United Nations Children's Fund (UNICEF) in New York (1993- 1996) and UNICEF Director for Japan, Australia and New Zealand (1990-1993).

Mr. Chowdhury was his country's Deputy Permanent Representative at the United Nations from 1980 to 1986. During that period, he also served as Chairman of the UNICEF Executive Board (1985-1986) and of the Programme Committee of UNICEF's Executive Board (1983-1985). He has also represented Bangladesh at 10 sessions of the United Nations General Assembly.

At the Foreign Ministry of Bangladesh, Mr. Chowdhury served as Director-General responsible for multilateral economic cooperation (1986-1990) and as Director-General for South and South-East Asia (1979-1980). In 1974, he was closely involved with the negotiations which secured the Security Council's approval of Bangladesh's entry to the United Nations.

Mr. Chowdhury has also variously been the President of the 1984 Pledging Conference of the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) and World Food Programme; Chairman of the Drafting Committee of the International Conference on Population and the Urban Future (1986); a Vice-President of the 1984 International Conference on Population; and Chairman of the United Nations Committee on Negotiations with Intergovernmental Agencies, which addressed conversion of the United Nations Industrial Development Organization (UNIDO) into a specialized agency of the United Nations (1985).

Mr. Chowdhury holds a Masters degree with honours in contemporary history from the University of Dacca.

Born on 5 February 1943, he is married and has three children.
