NEW PERMANENT REPRESENTATIVE OF FEDERATED STATES OF MICRONESIA PRESENTS CREDENTIALS

Resio S. Moses, the new Permanent Representative of the Federated States of Micronesia to the United Nations, presented his credentials today to Secretary-General Boutros Boutros-Ghali.

Prior to his appointment, Mr. Moses was Special Project Officer of the Pohnpei state government and consultant to the President of the Federated States of Micronesia for government transition. He was Secretary for External Affairs (1992-1995), and Governor of Pohnpei (1983-1992).

He served as Administrator, Department of Community Services, Trust Territory of the Pacific Islands (1978-1981); Executive Officer of the Trust Territory (1977-1978); and District Administrator of Pohnpei District (1976- 1977). He was elected to the Congress of Micronesia in 1973; during his three-year tenure, he served on various committees including as Chairman of the Ways and Means Committee.

From 1973 to 1992, Mr. Moses also served as President of the Federated States of Micronesia Constitutional Convention (1990); a member of the Board of Directors of the Pacific Islands Development Bank (1989-1992) and of the Federated States of Micronesia Development Bank (1978-1981); and a delegate of the Trust Territory of the Pacific Islands to the South Pacific Commission (1976) and to the United Nations Conference on the Law of the Sea (1973-1976).

Mr. Moses began his career as a Student Services Coordinator of the Department of Education of the Trust Territory in 1968 and subsequently taught at the Pacific Islands Central School (1970-1971) and at the Community College of Micronesia (1971-1972). He was President of the College of Micronesia, Pohnpei state (1981-1983).

Mr. Moses received a Master of Arts degree in political science in 1970 from the University of Akron, Ohio, United States and did post-graduate work in Pacific studies and higher education administration at the University of Hawaii (1971-1972).
