NEW PERMANENT REPRESENTATIVE OF SUDAN PRESENTS CREDENTIALS

19960723 Biographical Note

Elfatih Mohamed Ahmed Erwa, the new Permanent Representative of the Sudan, presented his credential today to Secretary-General Boutros Boutros- Ghali.

Mr. Erwa became the State Minister for Defence in August 1995, after serving, at the ministerial level, as the National Security Adviser (1989- 1995).

He began his career as an Army and Security Officer in 1970 and was promoted to the rank of Major-General in 1995. He was Consul General at the Embassy of the Sudan in Moscow (1977-1980), and in Addis Ababa (1980-1984).

After a stint in private business and as a pilot (1985-1987), he served as an intelligence expert at a research office of the Government of Saudi Arabia (1988-1989).

Mr. Erwa obtained a Diploma of Military Science from the Sudan Military College in 1970, and attended several courses in infantry, commando, air defence, intelligence, security and arms control in the Sudan, England, India, Egypt, Switzerland and the United States. He took those courses between 1974 and 1984.

Born on 11 May 1950 in Khartoum, Mr. Erwa is married and has three sons and four daughters.
