NEW PERMANENT REPRESENTATIVE OF MAURITIUS PRESENTS CREDENTIALS
19960723 Biographical NoteTaye Wah Michel Wan Chat Kwong, the new Permanent Representative of Mauritius to the United Nations, presented his credentials today to Secretary- General Boutros Boutros-Ghali.
Prior to his current appointment, Mr. Wan Chat Kwong served as his country's Minister-Counsellor to France and as representative to the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) (1995- 1996). From 1992 to 1995, he was Chargé de Mission in the Cabinet of the Secretary-General of the Agency for Cultural and Technical Cooperation, Paris. Last year, he was President of the Economic Commission of the Conseil Permanent de la Francophonie, also in Paris.
Mr. Wan Chat Kwong was Minister-Counsellor at the Mauritius Ministry of External Affairs (1990-1992), where he began his diplomatic career as Second Secretary (1976-1978). He was First Secretary at the Permanent Mission of Mauritius to the United Nations (1982-1989) and served as President of the African Group of the General Assembly's First Committee in October 1986. He was Second Secretary at the Mauritius High Commission in London (1981-1982) and Canberra (1978-1981).
Mr. Wan Chat Kwong received a master's degree in psychology from the University of Paris V in 1973 and a post-graduate diploma in industrial psychology from the Institute of Psychology, Paris, in 1974. He also studied in the Foreign Service Programme at Oxford University, United Kingdom, from 1989 to 1990.
Born on 12 April 1948 in Port Louis, Mr. Wan Chat Kwong is single.
