SECRETARY-GENERAL REGRETS INABILITY TO ATTEND ECOWAS SUMMIT IN ABUJA; DESIGNATES JAMES JONAH AS SPECIAL ENVOY

19960722 The following statement was made today by the Spokesman for Secretary- General Boutros Boutros-Ghali:

A ministerial meeting and summit of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) will be held from 22 to 27 July in Abuja.

Secretary-General Boutros Boutros-Ghali, due to his heavy schedule, regrets that he is not able to attend this event, which he considers very important. He has designated James Jonah as his Special Envoy to head the United Nations delegation, which will also include Professor Reginald Austen from the Secretariat of the Commonwealth. Mr. Austen has previously been involved in electoral assistance in Cambodia and South Africa. His services have been generously offered to the United Nations by the Secretariat of the Commonwealth.

The Secretary-General takes this opportunity to wish ECOWAS every success in promoting peace, stability and economic development in west Africa.
