SECRETARY-GENERAL ATTENDS CLOSING MEETING OF OAU SUMMIT

19960710 YAOUNDÉ, 10 July -- Secretary-General Boutros Boutros-Ghali this morning attended the closing meeting of the Summit of Heads of State and Government of the Organization of African Unity (OAU) which was presided over by President Paul Biya of Cameroon, who is the current Chairman of the OAU.

The OAU Summit was attended by 31 heads of State, four prime ministers, one vice-president and two deputy prime ministers. Other delegations were headed by foreign ministers or other cabinet ministers.

The Secretary-General also had a number of bilateral meetings. He met with President Sylvestre Ntibatuganya of Burundi. They discussed current efforts to put an end to insecurity in Burundi. The President briefed the Secretary-General on political developments in the country, in particular on efforts to create a national dialogue. They also discussed the plight of refugees and displaced persons.

He also met with Kingsley Amoako, Executive Secretary of the Economic Commission for Africa.

At the end of the afternoon, the Secretary-General will leave Cameroon for New York.
