SECRETARY-GENERAL EXPRESSES GREAT SADNESS OVER DEATH OF FORMER GREEK PRIME MINISTER ANDREAS PAPANDREOU

19960624 GENEVA, 23 June (UN Information Service) -- Following is the text of a statement by Secretary-General Boutros Boutros-Ghali:

The Secretary-General has learned with great sadness of the death this morning of Andreas Papandreou, the former Prime Minister of Greece.

A great humanist in the service of the ideals of social justice and democracy, Mr. Papandreou worked without respite for the happiness of the Greek people. During his three mandates as Prime Minister, he strove to resolve peacefully, through mediation and dialogue, regional conflicts and major international problems. The United Nations has also lost one of its faithful supporters.

At this painful moment, the Secretary-General sends his sincere condolences to the family of Mr. Papandreou, to the Greek people, and also to the President of Greece, Constantinos Stephanopoulos, and to its Prime Minister, Costas Simitis.
