SECRETARY-GENERAL CONGRATULATES UKRAINE ON REMOVAL OF ALL NUCLEAR WEAPONS FROM ITS TERRITORY

19960612 The following was issued by the Spokesman for Secretary-General Boutros Boutros-Ghali:

Secretary-General Boutros Boutros-Ghali is highly gratified that the process of the removal of all nuclear weapons from the territory of Ukraine has now been fully completed. The number of weapons involved is considerable: 4,400 warheads. This event furthers the cause of nuclear non-proliferation. The Secretary-General wishes to congratulate Ukraine on transforming itself into a country entirely free of nuclear weapons.

The Secretary-General urges all States to strengthen their cooperation in order to achieve a world free from the threat of nuclear weapons. In particular, he reiterates his calls for the successful conclusion of a comprehensive nuclear test-ban treaty by the end of this month, as a crucial step towards achieving global nuclear disarmament.
