SECRETARY-GENERAL HOPES TO CREATE BASIS FOR RESUMED DIRECT TALKS BETWEEN LEADERS OF TWO COMMUNITIES IN CYPRUS
19960606ISTANBUL, 6 June -- Secretary-General Boutros Boutros-Ghali today met with Mr. Rauf Denktash for one hour and fifteen minutes, during which they conducted an extensive review of all aspects of the Cyprus problem. On 11 June, he will meet with Mr. Glafcos Clerides in Geneva.
The Secretary-General hopes it will be possible to create the basis for the leaders of the two communities in Cyprus to resume direct talks. To that end, the calls on both sides to cooperate with his newly appointed Special Representative for Cyprus, Han Sung-Joo, and with his Deputy Special Representative Gustave Feissel, in order to create new momentum towards a peaceful solution of the Cyprus problem.
