SECRETARY-GENERAL MEETS WITH ADVISORY BOARD ON HUMAN SETTLEMENTS

ISTANBUL, Turkey, 4 June -- Secretary-General Boutros Boutros-Ghali today met with members of the Advisory Board on Human Settlements to discuss the all-important question of follow-up to the second United Nations Conference on Human Settlements (Habitat II). The Board includes the First Lady of Brazil, Ruth Cardoso; the Deputy Prime Minister of Uganda, E.T.S. Adriko; the Secretary of the Environment of the United Kingdom, John Gummer; the Mayor of Dubai, Quassim Sultan; the Mayor of Gaza, Aown Al-Shawa; the Mayor of Rome, Francesco Rutelli; and the President of the Board of Governors of Bilkent University in Ankara, Ihsan Dogramaci.

The Secretary-General later met with a group of mayors attending Habitat II, including the mayors of Santiago, Dakar, Montevideo, Nouakchott, Louga (Senegal) and Cologne (Germany), as well as the representatives of the Asia-Pacific network of cities and "Eurocities".

In the afternoon, the Secretary-General addressed the "Best Practices" award ceremony in the plenary hall of the Conference, and distributed prizes to the winners. Twelve cities received awards: Abidjan, Côte d'Ivoire; Buenos Aires, Argentina; Fortaleza, Brazil; Anhui, China; Ahmedabad, India; New York and Chattanooga, United States; Alexandra, South Africa; Tilburg, Netherlands; Toronto, Canada; Lublin, Poland; and Agadir, Morocco.
