GOVERNING COUNCIL OF UNITED NATIONS COMPENSATION COMMISSION HOLDS TWENTIETH SESSION

19960529 GENEVA, 28 May (UN Information Service) -- The Governing Council of the United Nations Compensation Commission began its twentieth session this morning in Geneva. After approving unanimously the agenda of the session, which will conclude on Thursday, 30 May, the Council heard the report of its Executive Secretary on the processing of the six categories of claims filed with the Commission, as well as on the payment schedule of the successful claims following the signing of the memorandum of understanding between the United Nations and Iraq on 20 May.

Statements were made by the representatives of Kuwait, Iraq, Jordan and India, States non-members of the Governing Council, at their request.

This afternoon, the Working Group of the Council began to consider the recommendations made by the panel of Commissioners concerning the second instalment of individual claims for damages up to $100,000 (category "C" claims). The second instalment of category "C" claims includes 62,337 claims from 69 countries and two international organizations presenting the claims of stateless persons. The amount of compensation recommended is approximately $425 million.

Other items on the agenda of the Working Group include discussions on processing and payment of claims and determination as to whether to accept or reject some claims recently filed with the Commission after the expiration of their respective time limits.
