UN UNIVERSITY TO HOLD PUBLIC FORUM ON UN SYSTEM IN TWENTY-FIRST CENTURY

19960506 NEW YORK, 2 May (UNU) -- The United Nations University (UNU) will hold a public forum here on 16 May as part of a major long-term research initiative on The United Nations System in the Twenty-first Century which it launched at a symposium held at UNU headquarters in Tokyo in November 1995. The objective of this five-year research programme is to explore and suggest possible appropriate models for international organizations, especially the United Nations, that would best meet the needs of the international community in the twenty-first century.

The Public Forum will be held from 3 p.m to 5:30 p.m. on Thursday, 16 May, in the Dag Hammarskjold Library Auditorium at the United Nations. Staff of the Secretariat, Permanent Missions, non-governmental organizations, academic institutions and United Nations media offices are invited to this event.

The purpose of the Public Forum is to provide an opportunity for the project's Research Organizers and Coordinators to take stock of the programme's progress to date, and to stimulate discussion on its future course. A panel discussion will focus on the following research areas: (1) States and Sovereignty; (2) Global Citizenship; (3) Market Forces; (4) Regional Arrangements; and (5) International Organization.

The Forum will be chaired by Heitor Gurgulino de Souza, Rector of the UNU. Thomas G. Weiss of Brown University will moderate the panel discussion. The project's Research Organizers -- Atul Kohli of Princeton University, Volker Rittberger of the University of Tubingen, Heizo Takenaka of Keio University, Muthiah Alagappa of the East-West Center, and Michael Doyle of Princeton University -- will act as the panel discussants.
