SECRETARY-GENERAL CONCLUDES TRIP TO JAPAN

19960409 TOKYO, 6 April -- On the final day of his official programme in Japan, Friday, 5 April, the Secretary-General, together with Mrs. Boutros-Ghali, was received in audience by Their Imperial Highnesses, the Crown Prince Naruhito and Crown Princess Masako at Togu Palace, Akasaka.

Later in the day, the Secretary-General visited Tsukuba University where he conferred with the Rector, Dr. Leo Ezaki, a 1972 Nobel Laureate in physics, as well as with the other senior academic figures at the University. They engaged in a vigorous and far-reaching dialogue on global issues and the key role of the United Nations.

The Secretary-General, while at Tsukuba, also visited the National Research Institute for Earth Science and Disaster Prevention (NIED). He was received by the Director-General of the Institute, Shigetsugu Uehara, and by the Director of the Research Centre for Earthquake Prediction, Yoshimitsu Okada. The Secretary-General was extensively briefed at the Institute's seismic research facilities.

The Secretary-General received a courtesy call from the Honorary President of Soka Gakkai, Daisaku Ikeda.

The Secretary-General left Japan on Saturday morning, 6 April, and flew back to New York.
