SECRETARY-GENERAL TO INAUGURATE NEW UNU RESEARCH INSTITUTE IN TOKYO

19960401 NEW YORK, 1 April (UNU) -- Secretary-General Boutros Boutros-Ghali will inaugurate the United Nations University's Institute of Advanced Studies (UNU/IAS), a new research and training centre of the UNU, at noon Wednesday, 3 April, in Tokyo. The inauguration ceremony will take place at the premises of the Institute which is adjacent to the University headquarters building in Shibuya.

The fifth research and training centre of the University system, the Institute was established by the University Council on 8 December 1995. It will conduct in-house research and postgraduate education, and will operate through networks of higher education institutions in many countries.

Conceived as an advanced research and education centre with a flexible and multi-thematic programme orientation concerned with the interactions of societal and natural systems, the Institute's initial activities will focus on three themes: eco-restructuring for sustainable development; mega-cities and urban development; and multilateralism and governance.

In addition to its research activities, the Institute will also have a postgraduate education programme which will provide young scientists with opportunities for expanding their intellectual vision beyond a single scientific field and stimulating them to make strategic use of knowledge for problem-solving. The programme is designed for students at the postgraduate level, mid-career researchers and government planners, particularly from developing countries. Students will participate in those activities through doctoral fellowships, short-term training courses and postgraduate exchange programmes.

Located in a five-story building complex adjacent to the UNU headquarters in central Tokyo, the premises have a total floor area of 6,000 square metres, including guest facilities, offices, and meeting, teaching and study rooms. The Institute is equipped with facilities for accessing libraries and databases in Japan and worldwide.
