UNITED NATIONS INSTITUTE FOR TRAINING AND RESEARCH AWARDS FELLOWSHIPS IN INTERNATIONAL LAW TO 18 CANDIDATES FROM DEVELOPING COUNTRIES
19960328 GENEVA, 28 March (UNITAR) -- The United Nations Institute for Training and Research (UNITAR) awarded 18 fellowships in international law to candidates from Armenia, Belarus, Cote d'Ivoire, Cyprus, Democratic People's Republic of Korea, Djibouti, Dominican Republic, El Salvador, Eritrea, Jordan, Kyrgyz Republic, Lao People's Democratic Republic, Malaysia, Namibia, Panama, Peru, Republic of Moldova and Togo.The training programme will take place at The Hague, the Netherlands, from 1 July to 9 August. Participants will be split into an English-speaking and a French-speaking group. They will attend special seminars organized by UNITAR as well as selected lectures on private and public international law at The Hague Academy of International Law.
The programme aims to enable qualified professionals from developing countries and countries in socio-economic transition, particularly mid-level government officials and young university teachers of international law, to acquire additional knowledge about international law and the legal work of the United Nations and its associated bodies.
To qualify for the fellowships, candidates should be law graduates with practical experience in the field of international law, acquired by working for a public or private organization or a university. Eligible participants are expected to be between the ages of 24 and 40.
The United Nations/UNITAR Fellowship Programme in International Law was launched under the United Nations programme of assistance for the teaching, study, dissemination and wider appreciation of international law and is organized annually by UNITAR and the United Nations Office of Legal Affairs.
For this year's pool, there were 201 applicants from 83 countries. Of those, 86 were from Africa, 39 from Asia and the Pacific, 30 from Latin America and the Caribbean, 13 from the Middle East and 33 from Eastern and Central Europe.
The candidates were selected by UNITAR's Joint Selection Committee, which met in New York on Friday, 22 March, under the chairmanship of Hans Corell, Under-Secretary-General for Legal Affairs and United Nations Legal Counsel. * *** *
