SECRETARY-GENERAL CONCERNED BY LIFTING OF CEASE-FIRE ON BOUGAINVILLE

19960322 The following statement was issued today by the Spokesman for Secretary- General Boutros Boutros-Ghali:

The Secretary-General has learned with concern of yesterday's announcement by the Government of Papua New Guinea that it had decided to lift the cease-fire on Bougainville. He regrets the loss of life resulting from the escalation of hostilities there. He calls on all parties to the conflict to exercise maximum restraint and to return to the negotiating table, so as to find a lasting and peaceful settlement. The Secretary-General remains ready to assist in facilitating a resumption of the peace process.
