UNITED NATIONS UNIVERSITY TO HOLD SYMPOSIUM ON WOMEN AND CHILDREN
19960320 NEW YORK, 20 March (UNU) -- The United Nations University will hold a public forum entitled "Symposium on Women and Children" on Friday, 22 March, from 1 to 3 p.m. at United Nations Headquarters in Conference Room 7. Staff of the United Nations, the permanent missions, non-governmental organizations and the United Nations press, as well as members of the academic community, are invited to attend.A series of successive United Nations-sponsored international conferences -- on Environment and Development (Rio, 1992), Human Rights (Vienna, 1993), Population and Development (Cairo, 1994), Social Development (Copenhagen, 1995), and Women (Beijing, 1995) -- have drawn international attention to issues related to women. The symposium will provide an opportunity for an exchange of views between practitioners and scholars to identify an integrated agenda and to explore common strategies for addressing the status of women.
The panel will be moderated by the Senior Vice-Rector of the United Nations University, Takashi Inoguchi. Panelists scheduled to appear include: the Chairperson of the United Nations Commission on the Status of Women, Sharon Brennen-Haylock; the Director of the International Research and Training Institute for the Advancement of Women, Martha Dueñas-Loza; the Assistant Director of the Division for the Advancement of Women, John Mathiason; and the Director of Women's Studies at Illinois State University (beginning January 1997) and formerly of the United Nations University's World Institute on Development Economics Research, Valentine Moghadam.
The United Nations University's Public Forum series is intended to make available the results of United Nations University research on issues of relevance to the United Nations system and to stimulate discussion on policy alternatives.
