SECRETARY-GENERAL TO VISIT FRANCE, CHINA, REPUBLIC OF KOREA, JAPAN

19960319 The following statement was issued today by the Spokesman for Secretary- General Boutros Boutros-Ghali:

United Nations' Secretary-General Boutros Boutros-Ghali leaves Geneva Wednesday, 20 March, for an official visit to France, China, Republic of Korea and Japan. The Secretary-General arrived in Geneva on Friday, 15 March, after having participated in the "Summit of Peacemakers" in Sharm El-Sheikh, Egypt, last Wednesday, 13 March.

While in France, from 20 to 23 March, the Secretary-General is scheduled to meet President Jacques Chirac, Prime Minister Alain Juppé, Foreign Minister Hervé de Charette, and other senior officials in the French Government. The Secretary-General will participate in a conference organized by the French Institute for International Relations and will receive an honourary doctorate degree from the University of Bordeaux.

In China, from 24 to 28 March, the Secretary-General is expected to meet President Jiang Zemin, Premier Li Peng, Vice-Premier and Minister for Foreign Affairs Qian Qichen, as well as with other high-ranking administration officials.

During his visit to the Republic of Korea, from 28 March to 2 April, the Secretary-General will meet President Kim Young Sam, Foreign Minister Ro-Myung Gong and other senior officials. The Secretary-General will receive an honourary doctorate degree from Korea University where he will deliver a speech entitled "The Land Mine Crisis: A Model of United Nations Leadership".

In Japan, from 2 to 6 April, the Secretary-General is expected to meet Prime Minister Ryutaro Hashimoto and Foreign Minister Yukihito Ikeda. The Secretary-General will participate in the opening ceremony of the Research Facility for Higher Education of the United Nations University.

The Secretary-General is expected back in New York on 6 April.
