SECRETARY-GENERAL CONGRATULATES SIERRA LEONE FOR 'DIGNITY, MATURITY, DETERMINATION' DURING RECENT PRESIDENTIAL ELECTIONS

19960318 The following statement was issued today by the Spokesman for Secretary- General Boutros Boutros-Ghali:

The Interim National Electoral Commission of Sierra Leone has announced the results of the second round of presidential elections held on 15 March, following the legislative poll that was completed earlier, on 26 to 27 February 1996. The Secretary-General has noted with satisfaction that the electoral process in Sierra Leone has been completed successfully. The Secretary-General would like to congratulate President-elect Ahmad Tejan Kabbah on his election.

The Secretary-General would also like to congratulate the people and the political parties of Sierra Leone for the dignity, maturity and determination with which they exercised their democratic right in the midst of difficult circumstances facing their country. He would like to commend the National Provisional Ruling Council and its Chairman, Brigadier-General Julius Maada Bio, for their commitment to the processes of democratization and peace in Sierra Leone. The Secretary-General congratulates the staff and Chairman of the Interim National Electoral Commission, James Jonah, for their hard work and perseverance.
