YUGOSLAV SANCTIONS COMMITTEE MODIFIES ARMS EMBARGO
19960314 The following statement was issued today by Ambassador Juan Somavía (Chile), Chairman of the Security Council Committee established pursuant to resolution 724 (1991) concerning Yugoslavia, on behalf of the members:On 14 December 1995, the Secretary-General submitted to the Security Council a report stating that Bosnia and Herzegovina, Croatia and the Federal Republic of Yugoslavia (Serbia and Montenegro) had formally signed the General Framework Agreement for Peace in Bosnia and Herzegovina and the Annexes thereto (collectively the Peace Agreement). Therefore, 13 March 1996 would be, in accordance with Security Council resolution 1021 (1995), the date of termination of all provisions of the embargo on deliveries of weapons and military equipment imposed by resolution 713 (1991), except those related to the delivery of heavy weapons, including all tanks and armored vehicles, all artillery 75 mm and above, all mortars 81 mm and above, all anti-aircraft weapons 20 mm and above, as well as ammunition for such weapons, mines, military aircraft and helicopters. The delivery of these items into the territories of Bosnia and Herzegovina, Croatia, the Federal Republic of Yugoslavia, the former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia and Slovenia would continue to be prohibited until the fulfillment of terms stipulated in resolution 1021 (1995).
In connection with the foregoing, the Committee reminds States and all others concerned of the importance of strict enforcement of measures imposed under Chapter VII of the Charter of the United Nations.
