19960312

Sponsored by UN University, Wellesley College, Campaign for Peace and Democracy, Global Policy Forum

The United Nations University is co-sponsoring, with Wellesley College, the Campaign for Peace and Democracy, and the Global Policy Forum, a conference on "The Fate of Democracy in the Era of Globalization" to be held 14 to 16 March at Wellesley College, Wellesley, Massachusetts. The event will provide an opportunity for practitioners and academics to meet and explore the prospects for democracy in a period of increasing globalization. The conference is being undertaken within the framework of the United Nations University's programme on "The Emerging Dimensions of Democracy: Globalization and New Leadership".

The conference seeks to address the following issues: How must we think about democracy in a globalizing era? What are the prospects for democracy at the level of the nation-state in the years ahead? What is the potential for democracy in international organizations? What new (and diverse) definitions of citizenship and democracy are required, and what new organizational forms should be considered? What roles can and should the United Nations play in democratization?

Plenary sessions on Intervention and Peacemaking, Challenges to Democracy North and South, and the United Nations and Global Institutions will be organized. In addition, the conference will include workshops on the following topics: the Security Council, non-governmental organizations, citizenship and human rights, the European Union, the United Nations and democratization, labour and trade unions, gender, transnational corporations, financing global institutions, Bretton Woods institutions, and alternative trade and investment models.
