UN AND UNIVERSITY OF ROME `LA SAPIENZA' ENTER INTO COOPERATIVE ARRANGEMENT IN HUMAN RESOURCES DEVELOPMENT AND NATIONAL CAPACITY-BUILDING
19960312 NEW YORK, 12 March (DDSMS) -- The United Nations and the University of Rome "La Sapienza" recently exchanged letters of agreement for a cooperative arrangement in activities for the development of human resources and the building of national capacities.The areas covered in the agreement, within the mandate of the Department for Development Support and Management Services (DDSMS), include energy policy, natural resources management, development planning and management, know-how and experience transfer from the University's Research Centres to corresponding local universities and industries.
The exchange of letters was made by the Director of the Division of Environment Management and Social Development, DDSMS, Beatrice Labonne, and the Rector of the University, Giorgio Tecce, at a ceremony in the University on Thursday, 7 March. The letters have been signed, for the United Nations, by the Under-Secretary-General for Development Support and Management Service, Ji Chaozhu, and on behalf of the University, by its Rector.
"La Sapienza" University maintains cultural agreements and scientific exchanges with virtually all important European Universities, as well as with many universities worldwide. It has participated in all the European exchange programmes and networks, which have been established to encourage cultural agreements and scientific exchanges among eastern and western European countries.
The DDSMS was established, among others, to develop, support and assume execution responsibilities, as required, for programme and projects aimed at institutional development, including institution-building, capacity-building and institutional reform, in cooperation with relevant organizational entities in the following areas: management of development planning, policies and infrastructure; governance and public administration; private sector development and enterprise management; financial management and accounting; natural resources and energy planning and management; and social development management and community development.
Cooperation between the DDSMS and the University will be defined on a project-by-project basis. The first operational meeting will be held later this year.
