SECRETARY-GENERAL, REFERRING TO MILITARY EXERCISES BY CHINA, HOPES FOR RESTRAINT BY ALL CONCERNED

19960308 The following statement was issued today by the Spokesman for Secretary- General Boutros Boutros-Ghali:

With regard to questions concerning the current military exercises conducted by China, the Secretary-General hopes that all concerned will exercise restraint so as not to interfere with the rights of other States under international law and to avoid tensions in the area.

The issue of Taiwan, province of China, is of course an internal one, on which the General Assembly ruled unequivocally in resolution 2758 (XXVI). In this context the Secretary-General notes China's firm and longstanding position that this issue will be resolved solely by peaceful means.
