GUATEMALA PEACE NEGOTIATIONS TO CONTINUE 27-29 MARCH IN MEXICO CITY

19960307 The following was issued today by the Spokesman for Secretary-General Boutros Boutros-Ghali:

Following consultations with the two parties, the United Nations will convene a new round of negotiations between the Government of Guatemala and the Unidad Revolucionaria Nacional Guatemalteca (URNG) form 27 to 29 March. The parties will continue consideration of the current item on the negotiating agenda, namely "Social and economic aspects and agrarian situation". At the kind invitation of the Government of Mexico, the round will take place in Mexico City.

Encouraged by the positive outcome of the last round of negotiations and the rapprochement achieved during the recent meeting between President Alvaro Arzu and the leadership of the URNG, the Secretary-General hopes that significant progress towards the conclusion of an agreement will be made at the forthcoming round.
