UNITED NATIONS UNIVERSITY SYMPOSIUM ON ENVIRONMENTAL AND ECONOMIC ACCOUNTING BEGINS IN TOKYO TOMORROW

19960306 NEW YORK, 6 March (UNU) -- The United Nations University (UNU) Institute of Advanced Studies, a newly established research and training centre of the University located adjacent to its headquarters in Tokyo, will organize a two- day international symposium on "Integrated Environmental and Economic Accounting in Theory and Practice" beginning tomorrow, 7 March. This is part of a series of symposia being organized in cooperation with Keio University and the Economic Planning Agency of Japan.

A main objective of the symposium is to further develop the green economic and accounting system by incorporating specific country-level experiences, including those of Canada, Germany, India and the Netherlands. The symposium will also seek to provide a conceptual framework for analysing the costs and benefits of environmental protection expenditures. The development of such a conceptual framework will result in a more finely tuned analysis of trade and environment, energy planning and other issues related to the global environment.
