SECRETARY-GENERAL VISITS SAO PAULO, BRASILIA

BRASILIA, 28 February -- On Tuesday, 27 February, at 9 a.m., the Secretary-General and Mrs. Boutros-Ghali arrived at Guarulhos International Airport, in San Paulo Brazil. The Secretary-General and his official party were greeted by the Chief of Protocol of the State of Sao Paulo, Arruda Botelho, as well as by other local authorities and personnel of the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) Central Office in Brazil, including Cesar Augusto Miguel, Resident Representative of the United Nations System in Brazil. The Secretary-General is accompanied by: Assistant Secretary-General Rosario Green, Special Adviser to the Secretary-General; Under-Secretary- General Gerd Rosenthal, Executive Secretary of the Economic Commission for Latin America and the Caribbean; and Assistant Secretary-General Fernando Zumbado, Assistant-Administrator and Regional Director for Latin America and the Caribbean, UNDP.

At 8 p.m., the Secretary-General and Mrs. Boutros-Ghali arrived at the Palacio de Bandeirantes, seat of the Government of the State of Sao Paulo. The Secretary-General was welcomed by Mario Covas, Governor of the State of Sao Paulo. Before attending a dinner in his honour hosted by the Governor and Mrs. Covas, the Secretary-General and Governor Covas presided over a brief ceremony during which an agreement on the subject of Education and Development between UNDP and the State of Sao Paulo, was signed.

On Wednesday, 28 February, at 10:15 a.m., the Secretary-General and his party arrived at the Chancery Building of the University of Sao Paulo, where they were greeted by the Chancellor of the University, Flavio Fava de Moraes. After a brief ceremony during which the Secretary-General was presented with the University's Medal of Honour, the Secretary-General delivered a lecture to the Institute of Advanced Studies, University of Sao Paulo, at the University's Council Room (see SG/SM/5901 issued 28 February). After his lecture and following a question and answer period from members of the faculty, the Secretary-General at 12:30 p.m. gave a 30-minute press conference with local and national correspondents.

The Secretary-General was the guest of honour at a luncheon hosted by Mr. Fava de Moraes at the Chancery private dining room.

At 6 pm., the Secretary-General left Sao Paulo on a Brazilian Air Force special flight, on his way to Brasilia.

The Secretary-General and Mrs. Boutros-Ghali, accompanied by the Permanent Representative of Brazil to the United Nations, Celso Luiz Nunes Amorim, and Mrs. Celso Amorim, arrived at Brasilia Air Force Base at 7:30 p.m. They were greeted by the Chief of Protocol of the Government of Brazil, Frederico Araujo, as well as senior officials of the Ministry of External Relations and representatives of UNDP in Brazil.
