DRAFT RESOLUTION ON WORK OF POPULATION DIVISION INTRODUCED IN POPULATION AND DEVELOPMENT COMMISSION

19960229 The Commission on Population and Development, under the terms of a draft resolution introduced this afternoon, would express regret that the work programme of the Population Division had to be adjusted to take into account the cash-flow situation of the United Nations.

The draft, which was introduced by the representative of Italy on behalf of the European Union, would have the Commission recognize the need for a reappraisal of the work programme in view of the increased demands resulting from United Nations conferences, as well as the financial situation.

Also by that text, the Commission would request the Director of the Population Division to consult with the Commission in the reappraisal of the work programme and would fully support the need to protect the long-term work programme, including both traditional demographic work and the development of innovative approaches to meeting new demands, following the outcome of the International Conference on Population and Development (Cairo, 1994) and other recent major United Nations conferences.

The Commission would note with concern that further restrictive adjustments to the work programme for the 1996-1997 biennium were still to be decided by the General Assembly, and would trust that no essential element of the envisaged programme would be affected. It would stress that priority should be attached to the elements of the work programme which relate directly to the monitoring and review of the Programme of Action adopted at the Cairo Conference.

The work of the Population Division would be regarded as, among others, serving the crucial needs of the international community for scientifically sound inputs to analysis, debate, planning and policy on population and development, according to the draft.

The Commission on Population and Development will meet again at 11 a.m. tomorrow, 1 March, to take action on draft resolutions.
