SECRETARY-GENERAL APPEALS FOR PEACEFUL SETTLEMENT TO NIGERIA, CAMEROON DISPUTE

19960226 The following statement was issued today by the Spokesman for Secretary- General Boutros Boutros-Ghali:

The Secretary-General received the Permanent Representative of Nigeria, Ibrahim Gambari, today at 4:30 p.m. at his request. Mr. Gambari explained Nigeria's position regarding its dispute with Cameroon over the Bakassi Peninsula and assured the Secretary-General of his Government's determination to settle the dispute peacefully.

The Secretary-General reiterated his earlier appeal to the two African countries to abstain from any action that might increase tension between them and to pursue their efforts with a view to achieving a peaceful settlement to their dispute.
