NEW PERMANENT REPRESENTATIVE OF THAILAND PRESENTS CREDENTIALS

Asda Jayanama, the new Permanent Representative of Thailand to the United Nations, this afternoon presented his credentials to Secretary-General Boutros Boutros-Ghali.

Prior to his appointment, Mr. Jayanama was the Director-General, Department of International Organizations of the Thai Ministry of Foreign Affairs (1993-1995).

Mr. Jayanama joined his country's diplomatic service in 1966 and has served as the Ambassador of Thailand to New Zealand (1990-1993), Singapore (1986-1990) and Viet Nam (1984-1986). While serving at the rank of Minister at the Royal Thai Embassy in Paris (1981-1984), he was also the Deputy Representative of Thailand to the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO).

Earlier, he served at the Foreign Ministry's Political Department as the Director of the South-East Asia Division (1979-1981) and Chief, Africa and Arab World Division (1979). From 1976-1979, he was First Secretary at the Royal Thai Embassy in Vienna, where he was also the Alternate Representative of Thailand to the United Nations Industrial Development Organization (UNIDO) and International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA).

Mr. Jayanama was the Chief of the International Development Affairs Division, International Organizations Department (1974-1976); Chief, South and West Asia Division in the Political Department (1973); and Second Secretary in the Royal Thai Embassy, Rangoon (1969-1973).

Mr. Jayanama studied at the University of California, Los Angeles, where he was awarded a Bachelor of Arts degree and a Master of Arts degree in economics, in 1964 and 1965, respectively.

Born on 17 September 1941, in Bangkok, Mr. Jayanama is married and has two children.
