NEW PERMANENT REPRESENTATIVE OF SAN MARINO PRESENTS CREDENTIALS

Pietro Giacomini, the new Permanent Representative of San Marino to the United Nations, this afternoon presented his credentials to Secretary-General Boutros Boutros-Ghali.

Prior to this appointment, Mr. Giacomini served, since 1994, as the Director of Economic and Social Affairs in his country's Foreign Affairs Department, with the rank of Ambassador. In that capacity, he also served as the President of the Committee for Cooperation between San Marino and the European Community, and as non-resident Ambassador to the Czech Republic. He has been on several missions, represented his country at international organizations and meetings and served as the personal representative of San Marino's Secretary of State for Foreign and Political Affairs at some General Assembly sessions.

Joining the civil service in 1970 as the Chancellor at the Secretariat of State for Finance and Budget, Mr. Giacomini then served, from 1973 to 1979, as Director of the Office of Industry, Craftsmanship and Trading. In 1979, he was appointed Chancellor at the Secretariat of State for Foreign Affairs and became, in 1983, the Executive of the Office of Economic and Social Affairs of the Foreign Affairs Department.

Mr. Giacomini graduated in 1969 from the Universita Cattolica del Sacro Cuore, Milan, Italy, with a degree in economies and trade.

Born on 14 October 1944 in San Marino, Mr. Giacomini is married and has one child.
