SECRETARY-GENERAL WELCOMES DECISION TO MAINTAIN 26 FEBRUARY AS DATE FOR ELECTIONS IN SIERRA LEONE

19960213 The following statement was issued today by the Spokesman for Secretary- General Boutros Boutros-Ghali:

The Secretary-General was pleased to learn that the National Consultative Conference on Elections overwhelmingly decided yesterday to maintain 26 February as the date for the holding of legislative and presidential elections in Sierra Leone.

The Secretary-General commends the Government of Sierra Leone and Brigadier-General Julius Maada Bio, Chairman of the National Provisional Ruling Council (NPRC) and Head of State, for their commitment to continue the democratic process.

The Secretary-General calls upon the Council, the Interim National Electoral Commission and the political parties to work together to fully implement the decision of the Consultative Conference and emphasizes the importance of the NPRC ensuring the safety and security of voters, polling stations and electoral workers. He also calls on the Revolutionary United Front to refrain from disrupting the elections.
