SECRETARY-GENERAL EXPRESSES CONCERN OVER BORDER CLASH BETWEEN NIGERIAN AND CAMEROONIAN TROOPS

The following statement was made today by the Spokesman for the Secretary-General:

Secretary-General Boutros Boutros-Ghali has learned with deep concern the news of the border clash between Nigerian and Cameroonian troops last Saturday, 3 February, which resulted in several casualties.

The Secretary-General calls on the parties to the dispute over the Bakassi Peninsula to show restraint and to withdraw their troops from the border areas to create the necessary conditions for the peaceful settlement of their dispute.

At the same time, the Secretary-General calls on the parties to the dispute to await the deliberation of the International Court of Justice which is presently seized with the case.
