SECRETARY-GENERAL STRESSES NEED FOR NIGER'S RETURN TO DEMOCRACY AND RULE OF LAW

19960202 The following is a statement attributable to the Spokesman for Secretary-General Boutros Boutros-Ghali:

The Secretary-General received the Permanent Representative of Niger this morning. The Ambassador requested the meeting, on instructions from the authorities in place, to brief the Secretary-General on recent developments in Niger.

The Secretary-General underlined that it was important for Niger to soon return to democracy and the rule of law. He asked the Ambassador to convey this message to his authorities.

The Secretary-General was aware of the appointment of a civilian cabinet in Niger. However, he believes that such a measure was not sufficient.

The Secretary-General expressed the hope that the authorities in Niamey will spare no effort to restore the image of a democratic Niger.
