NOTE TO CORRESPONDENTS SYMPOSIUM ON UNITED NATIONS GLOBAL CONFERENCES TO BE HELD 1 FEBRUARY

A symposium will be held on the significance of United Nations Global Conferences on Thursday, 1 February 1996, from 2:30 p.m. to 5:30 p.m. at the Harold M. Proshansky Auditorium of the Graduate Center of the City University of New York, 33 West 42nd Street. A reception will follow.

The symposium, sponsored by the Ralph Bunche Institute on the United Nations, is being held in connection with the third session of the Preparatory Committee for the United Nations Conference on Human Settlements (Habitat II), which begins on Monday, 5 February, at United Nations Headquarters. Symposium participants will include: the Permanent Representative of Chile to the United Nations, Juan Somavia; the Executive Director of the United Nations Children's Fund (UNICEF), Carol Bellamy; the Under-Secretary-General for Policy Coordination and Sustainable Development, Nitin Desai; the Secretary- General of Habitat II, Wally N'Dow; the Deputy Executive Director of the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA), Jyoti Shankar Singh; the representative of the High Commission for Human Rights and Chief of the Centre for Human Rights, Perificacion Quisumbing; and the Assistant Director of the Division for the Advancement of Women, John Mathiason.

Opening remarks will be delivered by the Albert Schweitzer Professor of Humanities Emeritus at the City University of New York, Arthur Schlesinger, Jr. Comments following the general discussion will be made by the J. Richardson Dilworth Professor of History at Yale University, Paul Kennedy. The President of the City University of New York Graduate School and University Center, Frances Degen Horowitz, and the Director, Ralph Bunch Institute on the United Nations, Benjamin Rivlin, will introduce the participants.
