SECRETARY-GENERAL CONDEMNS OVERTHROW OF NIGER'S GOVERNMENT

19960129 The following statement was issued on Sunday, 28 January, by the Spokesman for Secretary-General Boutros Boutros-Ghali:

The Secretary-General has learned with dismay the news of the overthrow of the legally established Government of Niger, the arrest of its leaders, including the head of State, the Prime Minister and the President of the National Assembly, and the subsequent suspension of the national constitution and of the activities of the political parties. The Secretary-General firmly condemns this act, which introduces changes in the national institutions of Niger through the use of force. He earnestly hopes that the country will soon return to a normal state, based instead on the democratic process.
