UNITED NATIONS ISSUES WALL CHART ON INTERNATIONAL MIGRATION POLICIES

19960129 NEW YORK, 29 January (DESIPA) -- A wall chart recently issued by the Population Division of the Department for Economic and Social Information and Policy Analysis (DESIPA) provides, in a schematic way, the most complete and up-to-date information available on the policies of 193 countries concerning immigration for permanent settlement, admission of migrant workers and their dependants, emigration, repatriation of nationals and integration of foreigners. The chart also indicates whether or not a country is a party to such refugee instruments as the 1951 Convention relating to the Status of Refugees and its 1967 Protocol.

The information on international migration policies is complemented by relevant data on the number of international migrants estimated to be living in each country as of 1 January 1990 (international migrant stock), the migrant stock as a percentage of the total population of each country at that date and an estimate of the percentage of women among the migrant stock. Lastly, the chart provides information obtained from the Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees on the number of refugees in each country as of early 1995 and, for selected countries, the estimated amount of remittances as a percentage of total foreign exchange earnings for the latest available year.

The chart also includes three selected graphs highlighting aspects of international migration. One graph shows estimates of net migration rates and the total number of persons gained or lost through net international migration by major areas of the world over the period 1990-1995. The other two charts show the size of the migrant stock of the countries hosting the largest number of international migrants and the number of international migrants as a percentage of the total population for those countries having the highest percentages of migrants.

The Chart, entitled International Migration Policies 1995 (Sales No. E.96.XIII.7), at $5.95 per copy, may be obtained from: the Sales Section, United Nations Publications, New York or Geneva; through major booksellers throughout the world; or by writing to the Director, Population Division, Department for Economic and Social Information and Policy Analysis, United Nations, 2 United Nations Plaza (Rm. DC2-1950), New York, NY 10017, United States.
