NEW PERMANENT REPRESENTATIVE OF HAITI PRESENTS CREDENTIALS
19960125 Biographical NotePierre Lelong, the new Permanent Representative of Haiti to the United Nations, this afternoon presented his credentials to Secretary-General Boutros Boutros-Ghali.
Prior to this appointment, Mr. Lelong served, since 1991, as his country's Ambassador to Mexico. He has represented his Government at the Organization for the Prohibition of Nuclear Weapons in Latin America and the Caribbean, Inter-American Conference on Social Security, Group of Latin American and Caribbean Sugar Exporting Countries, and the Pan American Institute of Geography and History. He has also participated in several international meetings, including the Second International Conference of New or Restored Democracies (Managua, 1994), Conference on the Association of Caribbean States (Caracas, 1994), Conference on the Situation of Haitian Refugees (Tegucigalpa, 1994), and the Conference of the Organization of American States (Managua, 1994).
Mr. Lelong began his career with the Ministry of the Navy, Mexico, where he was officer-in-charge of structural studies at the Directorate-General of Maritime Projects (1962-1972) and Assistant Director-General for Computer Science (1972-1982). In 1989, he was appointed Director, Federal District, responsible for works and for structural safety. Mr. Lelong has taught at the Faculty of Engineering of the National Autonomous University of Mexico since 1975, where he earned diplomas in civil engineering and in political science. He has published many academic publications.
Born on 5 January 1936 in Jérémie, Haiti, Mr. Lelong is married and has two children.
