SECRETARY-GENERAL MEETS AMBASSADOR OF IRAQ WHO CONVEYS ITS INTEREST IN DISCUSSIONS WITH UNITED NATIONS ON "OIL FOR FOOD" FORMULA
19960122 The following statement, attributable to the Spokesman for the Secretary- General, was issued on Friday, 19 January:The Secretary-General received the Permanent Representative of Iraq today at 6 p.m. at the Ambassador's request. During the meeting, the Ambassador handed over to the Secretary-General a letter from Deputy Prime Minister Tariq Aziz in which he informed the Secretary-General that, in response to his letter dated 18 January 1996, the Iraqi Government accepts the Secretary-General's invitation to enter into discussions with the Secretariat of the United Nations regarding the oil-for-food formula.
The Secretary-General hopes that these discussions will begin as soon as possible in New York.
