SECRETARY-GENERAL CALLS FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE OF HOSTAGES HELD IN IRIAN JAYA, INDONESIA

19960118 The following statement was issued today by the Spokesman for Secretary- General Boutros Boutros-Ghali:

The Secretary-General is following with concern the situation of the individuals being held by a group in Irian Jaya province of Indonesia, among them a staff member of the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO). The Secretary-General calls for the immediate release of the UNESCO staff member and all the other hostages, who were engaged in activities supporting environmental conservation in the region at the time of their seizure, and appeals for the early and peaceful settlement of the problem.
