NOTE TO CORRESPONDENTS

19951215 SECRETARY-GENERAL TO LAUNCH INTERNATIONAL YEAR

FOR ERADICATION OF POVERTY (1996)

Secretary-General Boutros Boutros-Ghali will launch the International Year for the Eradication of Poverty (1996) at 10 a.m. on Monday, 18 December, in the Trusteeship Council Chamber. The President of the General Assembly will chair the event at which the Secretary-General will deliver a major address about poverty eradication. The logo for the Year will be presented and information products will be available.

The year 1996 was proclaimed as the International Year for the Eradication of Poverty (GA resolution 48/183 of 21 December 1993) to catalyze action at all levels of society. Especially in keeping with the Declaration of the 1995 World Summit for Social Development in Copenhagen which contained a commitment to "reducing overall poverty in the shortest possible time", this endeavour is being placed at the very centre of national and international agendas.

In acknowledgement of the high priority of poverty eradication, a draft resolution (document A/C.2/50/L.80) declaring the period 1997-2006 as the first International Decade for the Eradication of Poverty is expected to be adopted by the General Assembly before the conclusion of its current session.

Representatives of the media are cordially invited to attend the launch.
