ECONOMIC, SOCIAL AND CULTURAL RIGHTS COMMITTEE ADOPTS REPORTS
19951206 GENEVA, 4 December (Un Information Service) -- The Committee on Economic, Social and Cultural Rights this afternoon adopted a series of reports pertaining to its work to be submitted to the Economic and Social Council.In the reports adopted, the Committee requested the authorization of the Council for the holding of two annual sessions by the Committee, in May and November-December, each of three weeks duration, in addition to a pre-sessional working group of five members to meet for five days immediately after each session to prepare the list of issues for consideration at the subsequent session.
Furthermore, the Committee fixed the forthcoming fourteenth and fifteenth sessions to take place from 29 April to 17 May 1996 and 18 November to 6 December, respectively.
It was also decided that the Committee will consider, during its fourteenth session, the initial reports of Paraguay, Guatemala and El Salvador. It will also examine the second periodic report of the Dominican Republic and the third periodic report of Spain.
The Committee further decided on the composition of the pre-sessional working group of the fourteenth session which comprised: Juan Alvarez Vita, expert from Peru; Ade Adekuoye, expert from Nigeria; Maria de los Jiménez Butragueno, expert from Spain; Valeri Kouznetsov, expert from the Russian Federation; and Chikako Taya, expert from Japan.
The Committee also adopted a report concerning a day of general discussion devoted to human rights education and public information activities relating to the Convention on Economic, Social and Cultural Rights held during the eleventh and twelfth sessions. During the discussion, members agreed that the provision of human rights education would affect the enjoyment of all rights in nature or directed at the elimination of discrimination against particular groups of persons.
