SECRETARY-GENERAL REGRETS SUDANESE DECISION TO RESTRICT RELIEF FLIGHTS IN SOUTHERN SUDAN

19951204 The following statement was issued today by the spokeswoman travelling with Secretary-General Boutros Boutros-Ghali:

Since 23 November 1995, increased fighting in the southern Sudan has severely hampered humanitarian relief operations. The Sudanese Government decision to restrict relief flights into different locations within southern Sudan has led to an effective cessation of relief operations and put at risk the safety of humanitarian workers. Over 4 million people benefitting from the United Nations led relief operation, Operation Lifeline Sudan (OLS), are now increasingly vulnerable to disease and malnutrition.

The Secretary-general regrets the decision of the Sudanese Government and calls upon all parties involved in the conflict to take the necessary steps to allow access to the innocent victims of the conflict, under the agreed OLS principles and operational procedures.
