NEW PERMANENT REPRESENTATIVE OF ANTIGUA AND BARBUDA PRESENTS CREDENTIALS
19951121 Biographical Note Patrick Albert Lewis, the new Permanent Representative of Antigua and Barbuda, presented his credentials to Secretary-General Boutros Boutros-Ghali this afternoon.Prior to his current appointment, Mr. Lewis served as Ambassador of his country to the United States and the Organization of American States (OAS), and since 1992 also served as Vice-Chairman of the OAS Special Committee on Hemispheric Security. Earlier, he was rapporteur on the problems of small States for the OAS Working Group on Hemispheric Security and Chairman of the OAS Committee on Regulations and Procedures (1991-1992).
Mr. Lewis began his diplomatic career as Adviser to the Deputy Prime Minister of his country (1984-1987), and then served as Minister-Counsellor of Antigua and Barbuda to the United Nations (1987-1991).
Prior to his diplomatic service, he pursued an academic career; as Assistant Professor of History at the University of Cincinnati (1971-1973), and later as Assistant Professor, Associate Professor and Professor of History at the Hampton Institute (1973-1984). He was also Editor of the Hampton Institute Journal of Ethnic Studies (1976-1984).
Mr. Lewis received his Bachelor's Degree in History from Hampton Institute in 1966. In 1968, he obtained a Master's degree from the University of Cincinnati, from which he also received his PhD in history in 1974.
Born in St. John's, Antigua, on 27 November 1938, Mr. Lewis is married and has two children.
