MAJOR-GENERAL GIAN GIUSEPPE SANTILLO (ITALY) TO COMMAND UNITED NATIONS IRAQ-KUWAIT OBSERVER MISSION (UNIKOM)

Secretary-General Boutros Boutros-Ghali has announced the appointment of Major-General Gian Giuseppe Santillo of Italy to be Force Commander of the United Nations Iraq-Kuwait Observation Mission (UNIKOM), with effect from 1 December next.

Major-General Santillo succeeds Major-General Thapa of Nepal, who has served as Force Commander since 1 December 1993. The Secretary-General takes this opportunity to pay a warm tribute to Major-General Thapa for his distinguished service in this peace-keeping mission.

Major-General Santillo has held several operational commands during his career, including Deputy Commander of the Southern Military Region in Italy. He held a position of the Army General Staff and was also assigned as defence and military attache in Russia.

A graduate of the Italian Military Academy, he attended the Junior Officers' School (Military University), Staff College, as well as the National Institute for Higher Defence Studies of Italy.
