STATEMENT BY GENERAL ASSEMBLY PRESIDENT TO NON-GOVERNMENTAL ORGANIZATIONS ON YOUTH YEAR ANNIVERSARY

19951026 Following is the text of a statement made today by General Assembly President Diogo Freitas do Amaral during a special segment for non-governmental organizations of an Assembly plenary meeting marking the tenth anniversary of International Youth Year:

"Young people in all countries are both a major human resource for development and key agents for social change, progress, and technological innovation. Their imagination, ideals, energies and vision are essential for the continuing renewal of societies.

"I have the honour to introduce a special segment devoted to statements of both international and regional youth non-governmental organizations in consultative status and/or with working relations with the United Nations system. This demonstrates the importance which the General Assembly attaches to the role of youth in the formulation, implementation and evaluation of these global standards on, by and for youth.

"A similar non-governmental organization event was witnessed during the special plenary meetings on youth held by the General Assembly on 13-15 November 1985, in honour of the International Youth Year.

"It is now my privilege to introduce the representatives of major international and regional youth non-governmental organizations to make statements to the General Assembly. They have been selected by the United Nations because of their outstanding contribution to the objectives of the International Youth Year."
