SECRETARY-GENERAL MEETS WITH PRESIDENT OF GUATEMALA

19951024 This statement was issued this evening by the Spokesman for Secretary- General Boutros Boutros-Ghali:

At 6:30 p.m. today, the Secretary-General received the President of Guatemala, Ramiro de Leon Carpio.

President De Leon Carpio briefed the Secretary-General on the situation in his country regarding the forthcoming elections. He informed the Secretary-General that 60 per cent of the population eligible to vote had already been registered and a large turnout for the elections was expected.

President De Leon Carpio reiterated his commitment to do his utmost to foster the peace negotiations with a view to reaching as many agreements as possible.

The Secretary-General reaffirmed that the United Nations was at the service of the Government and people of Guatemala and would exert every effort to assist in the conclusion of a comprehensive peace settlement as soon as possible.

The Secretary-General thanked the President of Guatemala for his presence in New York to participate in the special commemorative meeting of the General Assembly marking the fiftieth anniversary of the United Nations.
