SECRETARY-GENERAL MEETS WITH SECOND DEPUTY PRIME MINISTER OF SAUDI ARABIA

The following statement was issued today by the Spokesman for Secretary-General Boutros Boutros-Ghali:

 

At 5 p.m. today, the Secretary-General met with His Royal Highness Prince Sultan Bin Abdulaziz Al-Saud, Second Deputy Prime Minister of Saudi Arabia and Minister of Defense and Aviation and Inspector General. The Chairman of the Executive Committee of the Palestine Liberation Organization, Yasser Arafat, also attended the meeting.

The Secretary-General and Prince Sultan reviewed the financial crisis of the United Nations, the situation in Bosnia and Herzegovina and the latest developments in the Middle East peace process. The Secretary-General apprised Prince Sultan of United Nations assistance to the Palestinian people in Gaza, which was being supervised by his Special Coordinator Terje Larsen.

The Deputy Prime Minister, on behalf of Saudi King Fahd, expressed his full support for the United Nations and all its specialized agencies involved in development.

The Secretary-General thanked Prince Sultan for his presence in New York to participate in the special commemorative meeting of the General Assembly marking the fiftieth anniversary of the United Nations.
